Things to Do in Timpson, Texas

Timpson's signature event is Frontier Days, an annual festival put on by the Chamber of Commerce that dates back to around 1960, when merchants on the square decided the town deserved a celebration. It brings out a parade, a pageant, arts and crafts, live demonstrations and folklore, carnival rides, food, and entertainment — a real hometown gathering that celebrates the town's history.

That history is part of the fun. Timpson was built by the railroad in 1885, and its streets still run at a quirky 43-degree angle laid out along the old tracks. The town's name even reached far beyond Shelby County through the song 'Tenaha, Timpson, Bobo, and Blair,' a railroad call turned good-luck dice chant recorded by cowboy singer Tex Ritter.

For outdoor recreation, Lake Timpson sits just outside town — a roughly 223-acre reservoir completed in 1956 and known as a solid bass lake. Anglers come for largemouth bass under a 14-to-21-inch slot limit that yields trophy-sized fish, along with crappie and catfish, fishing around the lake's standing timber, docks, and vegetation.

Beyond the lake, the surrounding Piney Woods offer hunting, scenic country drives, and the quiet outdoor pleasures of East Texas. For a bigger day on the water, Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Louisiana line is within a reasonable drive to the east.

Timpson's location keeps several towns within easy reach. Center, the Shelby County seat about fifteen miles southeast, offers its historic courthouse square, shopping, and the county's poultry-country dining. Nacogdoches, roughly half an hour west on US-59, is the oldest town in Texas — a college town with museums, historic districts, Stephen F. Austin State University, and a lively downtown.

The broader region adds more lakes, small-town festivals, and East Texas heritage within a reasonable drive. Between Frontier Days, Lake Timpson, the railroad history, and the nearby towns, Timpson offers plenty to do for a community its size.
