Rusk County

Overton, Texas

Small town, strong roots, no pretense

Pop. ~2,550 | Rusk County

The Friday night lights in Overton hit different. Not because the stadium's fancy — it's not — but because half the town shows up whether they've got kids on the field or not. That tells you everything about this place. Overton sits in Rusk County with about 2,550 people, a handful of churches, and the kind of Main Street that still has diagonal parking. It's an agricultural town at its core. Always has been. Cattle, timber, and oil built it. The folks who stayed kept it going through sheer stubbornness and pride. You won't find a Target here. You won't find a Starbucks. What you will find is a town where the school district is the heartbeat, neighbors actually know your name, and a handshake still means something. People move to Overton on purpose — for the quiet, for the land, for the cost of living that lets you breathe. It's 20 minutes from Henderson, 45 from Tyler. Close enough to get what you need. Far enough to keep what you've got.

Living in Overton

Overton is a place where life moves at a pace you set yourself. Morning coffee on the porch. A wave from the mail carrier who knows your dog's name. Kids riding bikes until the streetlights come on — yes, that still happens here.

Housing is dirt cheap by almost any standard. You can buy a three-bedroom home on a half-acre for what a studio apartment costs in Austin. Land is available if you want acreage. And property taxes in Rusk County won't make your eyes water.

The trade-off is obvious: you're driving for groceries, medical care, and most retail. But people here don't see that as a trade-off. They see it as the price of peace and quiet. And they'll pay it gladly.

Schools and Community

Overton ISD punches above its weight. Small class sizes. Teachers who coach and tutor and show up at church on Sunday. The kind of school where the principal knows every kid by first name.

That matters. A lot of families choose Overton specifically for the schools. The district covers Pre-K through 12th grade on a compact campus, and the community rallies behind it — bond elections pass, booster clubs stay active, and graduation is a town-wide event.

Beyond the schools, community life runs through the churches, the volunteer fire department, and the seasonal events that pop up on Main Street. It's not flashy. But it's real.

The Land and What's Around It

East Texas pines. Rolling pastures. Red dirt roads that turn to mud after a good rain. Overton's surrounded by the kind of countryside that reminds you Texas isn't all flat and brown.

Lake Murvaul is a short drive south — good bass fishing, quiet banks, no crowds. Martin Creek Lake State Park is close enough for a day trip with better facilities and camping. You're in timber country here, so the fall color is sneaky good.

If you hunt, you already know about Rusk County. Deer, hog, dove. Private land leases are common and more affordable than counties closer to Dallas.

Getting Around from Overton

Highway 135 runs through town. It connects you north to Henderson and south toward Troup and Jacksonville. For bigger trips, I-20 is about 15 miles north.

Tyler's your go-to for shopping, hospitals, and restaurants. Longview's roughly the same distance east. Shreveport's under two hours if you want casinos or a bigger city fix. Dallas is about two hours west on I-20.

No public transit. You need a vehicle. But gas is cheap and traffic doesn't exist.
