Lindale Guide

The History of Lindale, Texas

Lindale began as a railroad town in the 1870s and grew up around the orchards, flour mills, and canneries of fertile Smith County. For most of its history it was a small farming community known for peaches and produce; in recent decades, its location just north of Tyler on Interstate 20 has turned it into one of East Texas's fastest-growing towns — and a country-music destination as the hometown of Miranda Lambert.

Here's how Lindale grew from a depot on the prairie into the town it is today.

A Railroad Beginning

Lindale was founded in 1871, and by 1874 the settlement had taken the name Lindale. The town's future was secured in 1875, when it became a station on the new International–Great Northern Railroad. The railroad gave local farmers a way to ship their crops to market, and the community grew quickly around the depot — reaching about 300 residents by 1880.

Like many East Texas towns of the era, Lindale owed its early existence to the rails. The line connected the fertile farmland of Smith County to the wider world, and the town became a shipping point for the fruit and produce that the surrounding countryside grew so well.

Peaches, Flour Mills, and Canneries

By 1892 Lindale had grown to around 500 people and supported seven flour mills, the East Texas Canning Factory, and a high school. The town's agricultural economy boomed: in 1895 the J. S. Ogburn and Company Canning Factory opened, specializing in peaches, and fruit and truck farming became the major sources of local income. By 1902 the population had reached about 1,200, making Lindale the third-largest town in Smith County, and in 1905 the town was incorporated.

This was Lindale's first heyday — an era of orchards, canneries, and rail shipping that defined the town's identity for generations. The fertile soil that drew those early farmers is the same land that still grows blueberries, peaches, and produce around Lindale today.

Growth in the Modern Era

Lindale grew steadily through the 20th century, with about 1,285 residents in 1965 and 2,428 by 1990. The real acceleration came from the town's location: its proximity to Tyler and Interstate 20, the fertility of the soil, and good schools made Lindale an increasingly attractive place to live.

That growth has only sped up in the 21st century. The population reached 6,059 by the 2020 census and has continued climbing toward roughly 7,800 — a remarkable expansion for a town that counted barely 3,000 residents in 2000. Today Lindale is part of the Tyler metropolitan area, blending its small-town agricultural roots with the amenities of a fast-growing East Texas community.
