The History of Chandler, Texas

Chandler is a Henderson County town at the northern end of Lake Palestine, about thirteen miles southwest of Tyler, with a history that runs from a frontier general store to the railroad to the lake that reshaped its future. Once a tiny crossroads called Stillwater, it grew into a railroad town and, a century later, into a sought-after lakeside community.

Here's how Chandler came to be.

Stillwater and the Founder

The area around Chandler was originally home to the Caddo Indians before Anglo settlement. In 1859 Alphonso H. Chandler settled the area, establishing a one-store town called Stillwater about two miles north of the present townsite. A post office followed in April 1873, and in 1880 it was renamed in Chandler's honor.

That small beginning — a single store at a country crossroads — was typical of frontier East Texas, where a store and a post office often marked the first stirrings of a community. The Chandler name would soon attach to a new settlement just down the road, where the future of the town would take shape.

The Railroad Builds the Town

Chandler as a real town began in 1880, when the Texas and St. Louis Railway extended its line through the area. Alphonso Chandler donated land to the railway, and a new settlement — named for him — grew up alongside the tracks, drawing business and residents to the rail line.

The town developed quickly. By 1890 Chandler had a cotton gin, a mill, a school, and two churches — the full complement of a working East Texas farm town. In 1910 the community formally incorporated, cementing its identity as an established town serving the surrounding countryside between Tyler and Athens.

Lake Palestine Changes Everything

The most transformative event in Chandler's modern history came in the 1960s, with the construction of Lake Palestine. The new 25,000-acre reservoir wrapped around the town — which sits on high ground between two of the lake's arms, Kickapoo Creek to the west and the Neches River to the east — and changed Chandler's character for good.

The lake turned Chandler into a desirable destination, drawing both weekend visitors and permanent residents seeking peaceful living and waterfront recreation within easy reach of Tyler. What had been a small farm-and-rail town became a lakeside community, and that combination — small-town roots and lake-country appeal — defines Chandler today, a growing town of around 3,000 residents on the shores of one of East Texas's premier lakes.
